Health and Beauty - April 2009

Angelina Jolie has been named Most Beauitful Woman in the World by Vanity Fair, claiming 58% of the votes, beating Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Connelly, Penelope Cruz and Halle Berry. Possibly the only woman not inundated with hate mails when she ‘stole’ arguably the world’s most beautiful man from another, but instead earning comments such as, ‘Well, what guy wouldn’t?’, Jolie seems to have it all – from looks that have seen little or no plastic surgery to her active humanitarian work which only proves she’s not the type to waste her fame and money on frivolous things like her counterparts are wont to do.

Looking back on her transformation through the years, Jolie is a far cry from the child whom she described as being ridiculed for her second-hand clothes, an extremely thin figure with glasses and braces.

At the age of 23 months, Jolie wasn’t always the dark-haired seductress. She was born a cherubic blonde who seemed to already have an eye for the camera.

angelina jolie as a child
With those big dark eyes and trademark pout, Jolie, before she reached her teens, already had that worldly expression – and the fashion to match.

teen angelina jolie
From the age of 14, Jolie began working as a fashion model, mainly in LA, New York and London and soon learnt the art of looking sultry and showing her lips to full advantage.

angelina jolie hackers
In Hackers, where she met her first husband Johnny Lee Miller on set in 1995, Jolie embraced the punk look and perfects the seductive glare – head tipped down, eyes looking up and mysterious, complemented by the playful arch of her brows.

angelina jolie gia
1998 Gia, methinks Jolie looks a bit like Ashley Judd in this photo.

angelina jolie girl interrupted
In what was supposed to be a comeback movie for Winona Ryder in 1999's Girl Interrupted, Jolie instead outshone the main star and nabbed the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, proving she’s not just a pretty face after all.

angelina jolie billy bob thornton
Jolie soon became the pretty girl with a bit of edge when she married Billy Bob Thornton and admitted they had vials of each other’s blood tied around their neck. It was also revealed at this time that Jolie was fond of self-mutilation as a teen to get some ‘release’.

angelina jolie tomb raider
Guys oohed and aahed over Jolie as the buxom Tomb Raider's Lara Croft with the short shorts, a powerful right hook and a love for guns but all I could remember was that scene where she walked down the stairs and her left boob seemed to be drooping down to her belly. Hmm…

angelina jolie mr and mrs smith
Well, come on, now. Brad Pitt – or Jennifer Anistion, for that matter, didn’t stand a chance with this get-up in 2005's Mr & Mrs Smith.

angelina jolie pregnant with twins
A Yummy Mummy. With four kids and two on the way, Jolie still looked fresh-faced and glamorous.

angelina jolie oscars

Looking like this at the 2009 Academy Awards, I have no doubt Jolie would have no problem convincing Pitt to try for a seventh child.

It’s been months since you’ve given birth and you hope you’d have gone back to your pre-pregnancy weight. You start regretting all the fried chicken, burgers and fajitas you ate during pregnancy – and probably after birth too – and you develop a hatred for the likes of Heidi Klum and Jessica Alba for shedding off all that weight in just a matter of weeks. How did they do it? Forget liquid diets, diet pills, detox and starvation, here are some celeb yummy-mummies who beat the baby bulge and how they did it -
Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba - now a hot mama

Jessica Alba was the cause of many fights when I found out she was the reason why my then-boyfriend wouldn’t answer my calls during Dark Angel. So when I heard that she was pregnant, I was smugly certain that her status as the World’s Sexiest Woman would come crashing down. But postpartum, the girl looks even better than before, sporting a bigger bust! Grrr…

Her secret? 3-2-1 Baby Bulge Be Gone by Ramona Braganza. It’s a 12-week program, no-nonsense, practical approach to weight loss that combines healthy eating and exercise. You’re encouraged to eat three meals and two snacks daily but the main staples are fresh vegetables, lean protein, complex carbohydrates and plenty of water. Her exercise plan is also divided into 3 phases, designed to gradually get you moving.

Naomi Watts
Naomi Watts - looking nice and svelte

Naomi Watts lost her baby weight just two months after giving birth to her second son. She says she ate more than she did when she was pregnant but she didn’t resort to any fad diets. Before you start hating her, she adds that her weight loss was down to breastfeeding.

Everyone goes on about it – from your grandmother to the midwives to the community nurse. I remember when I was pregnant, the most asked question besides, “Is it a girl or a boy?” was “Are you going to breastfeed?”

Not only does breastfeeding provide all the nutrition your baby needs for the first six months but it burns between 200 to 500 calories a day, depending on how much the baby eats. This is great news considering I burn 300 calories doing one hour of Tae-Bo!

Just make sure to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.
Heidi Klum
Heidi Klum - still a Victoria's Secret runway model

Heidi Klum seems to have it all, doesn’t she? A loving husband, three gorgeous kids – and she managed to walk down the runway with no ounce of fat, stretch marks or cellulite only three weeks after the birth of her third child. Many have accused Klum of resorting to plastic surgery but she insists that her weight loss is due to exercise (which she kept up to the last month of pregnancy), eating healthy and a fast metabolism.

So what motivated Klum to hit the gym so fast after childbirth – besides the idea of being touted as a ‘has-been-model?’ Taking photos of her nude body every week apparently. Keeping track of how her body changes every week motivates her to keep active and eat well. She says that she also made sure all junk food was taken out of her fridge (as if there was ever any, right?) and replaced them with healthy food so she wouldn’t be tempted to snack on high-calorie foods like her favourite, ice cream.
Nicole Ritchie
Nicole Ritchie - an advocate for stroller-walking

Nicole Ritchie, now pregnant with her second child, says she barely has time to polish her nails these days, let alone go to the gym. Her only form of exercise is hanging out with her daughter, Harlow and taking her for a walk in the stroller.

It may not burn that many calories but it’s better than sitting at home with the baby blues and the fresh air is sure to revive your spirits. You can start slowly by aiming for a ten-minute walk around the block then gradually make each walk longer, incorporating some steep climbs along the way as your energy picks up. Even short, frequent walks with the stroller each day will help. Pushing the pram, especially up a small hill, will work wonders for your triceps. What’s great about this is that it helps settle the baby as well. The baby will get some much-needed rest while you get some exercise.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow shows off her sexy legs

Gwyneth Paltrow attributes her svelte, post-birth figure to breastfeeding, a balanced diet – and Spanx. Spanx is a figure-shaping underwear that smooths out the lumps and bumps. It’s a great, quick-fix for that night out where you want to look special without fear of any unattractive jiggling. Paltrow even wore one to the Oscars.

With the fatigue, sleep deprivation and the blues most mums experience after birth, losing weight is tough. Whatever you decide to do to take the weight off, it’s important to remind yourself to take things easy and not be pressured into losing the weight as quickly as possible. It took nine months to put the bulk on so take the same amount of time to shed it.
