Health and Beauty - April 2010

Weight loss is commonly what is on most of our minds when we consider going on a diet but what about the athletes? How valuable is diet for long distance athletes, high level sprinters and olympic champions?

If you are about to compete for a marathon where energy is very important to finishing the race, chances are good, you would load up on carbs pre-race. But no-one ever really explains why you should and what complex carbs do to give you energy Complex carbs give more energy because they use less oxygen than most foods such as fat. Because of this they metabolize enough to give little boosts of energy that a soccer player or cross country skiier would need to perform well over a long stretch.

Focusing on carbs is a good thing, at least before the race and many athletes claim that loading a diet with carbs by as much of 70% two days before the race gives them enough energy stores to be competitive at an elite level.

Could a diet consisting mostly of carbohydrates be good during training as well for the athlete? Or should you change your eating habits for the best results during training?

The answer is yes.

Lately, many athletes that rely on endurance are making the switch to the "caveman" or paleo diet during training but most use a modified version of it. The paleo diet for athletes involves nothing unnatural, meaning that foods that are processed including most of the complex carbs we eat including rice, bread and pasta, are completely off limits.

The reason for this modification is that while complex carbohydrates are good for your energy stores, there are some who believe that they could actually hamper the body's ability to repair muscles efficiently during long and rigorous training sessions Plus, different foods are harder on our bodies to process. The paleolithic dieters believe that the less energy your body has to spend processing what we eat, the more time our body can spend repairing itself.

Usually, the carb loading is temporary though. Most elite athletes take special care as to what goes into their body. Usually, during non training times, an athlete will stick to the cleanest foods he or she can and avoid the foods that contain sugar and grains. If you ask any competitor, they are going to tell you that the paleo diet is just smart eating. And although they will load up on carbohydrates during race time, a cleaner diet during non-competition days is not only good for them from a health perspective, it is just smart.

weight loss after 40
I was 22 then and a typical meal consisted of a couple Big Macs and super size fries and it was okay. My six foot frame was easily able to absorb the mega calories I was putting into it because of my lifestyle and metabolism. This went on for several years. Then something funny happened right about my 30th birthday. I had unknowingly developed a "pudge" around my midsection.

Suddenly, those Big Macs....that Taco Bell "4th meal" and all you can eat pancakes at IHOP had caught up to me. I was getting older and my "lifestyle" diet was not working out the way I thought it would be. So why do we gain weight as we grow older and why is losing that weight that we put on much harder to lose?

The reason as to why we gain weight is simple. If you fail to burn the calories that you put into your body, the calories will have to go somewhere (and in my case it was the tire around my midsection).

But weight loss for people after 40 and beyond becomes more complicated than simply dieting because as many can attest, even if you lower your calories, you still may not lose weight.

Why is that? What factors play in midlife weight loss?

Insulin is a major factor. As we age, our ability to become insulin resistant grows. Insulin plays a huge part in how we metabolize energy. Excess insulin means that you won't burn off the energy as efficiently.

The cure for this is to drop calories down to around 1,500-1,800 calories.

You Resting Metabolic Rate drops....

Another factor that comes into play as we age is that our resting metabolic rate drops as the years pass. This poses a problem because when our resting metabolic rate drops, we should eat less to accommodate the change. What results is that our bodies may have an extra 120-180 extra calories to deal with....

This is despite the fact that you are eating the same diet.

Some quick solutions (other than dreaded exercise) include drinking green tea which has shown to increase your resting metabolic rate as well as take some fish caplets (omega 3's and 6's do more than help you lose weight though).

Another solution to increasing your RMR is to eat spicy foods loaded with Capsaicin. Red Pepper and spicy foods raise body temperature which in turns motivates thermo-genesis. That is fancy talk for your body will burn more calories, by the way.

Of course, your diet plays a significant part to losing weight as well as exercise but sometimes as we get older, even that isn't enough. And I can say that many aging men and women can attest that sometimes no matter how hard you try and no matter how many episodes of the biggest loser you watch, you can't help to wonder why the weight doesn't want to come off....

And now you know.....

If you like this, you may like my take on the paleo diet as well....

Can you lose weight with the Paleo diet? Of course. And very quickly. In fact, I played around with this diet a year or so back and found that I was losing about a pound and a half every other day. And if you are thinking that this is an endorsement to this highly restrictive diet that actually works and will make you feel great, you won't get one from me....

The paleo diet is hard. In fact, although it is effective, you will find that food will become more boring on the paleo diet....

Let me explain....

The Caveman Diet

caveman diet, paleo diet
Today's version of "hunting"

For those of you who don't know what this diet is about, it uses the assumption that we, as humans, aren't evolved to eat the diet that we all currently eat. It asserts that our species evolution into agricultural things is primarily the reason why we are unhealthy and fat. It boldly makes the claim that many modern day diseases probably didn't exist 15,000 years ago when we had stopped living in trees and became hunters and gatherers.

Things like arthritis could be cured if you jump on this diet. Diabetes, Gout high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other very modern day conditions would go away....still interested?

Before you make those reservations in the Bahamas and pre-purchase that size 0 bathing suit that will take the place of your size 10 frame in a couple months, understand that the paleo diet will require some serious modifications to your diet.

I say serious because in this day and age, I highly doubt that there is more than a fraction of the population that currently and naturally could last for a week on the Paleo diet, nevermind making it thier lifestyle diet....

But you will lose weight and be healthier....happiness becomes optional though if food is what makes you happy (and you may be surprised that this is the case even if you don't consider yourself a food addict).

What you can eat on the Paleo Diet

Rather than the laundry list of things you can't eat on this diet, I feel it better to say what you can eat....

You are allowed to eat anything that you would be able to eat if you were hanging out in the woods foraging or hunting animals on your own....just like a caveman.

This entails primarily 2 things-

Animal Protein

Fruits and Vegetables that can be eaten in a raw state
.

Just in case you didn't realize what that doesn't include, think of it this way...

Cavemen didn't have access to processed foods...

They also didn't have access to sugar, alcohol, or so many other vices that are considered "normal" in today's society...

Because Potatoes are toxic precooked (yeah, bet you didn't know that), potatoes or "tubers" are off the menu as well....

Same goes for peanuts (toxic if eaten raw), although all the other nuts like almonds and what not are perfectly fit for the caveman in you.

Dairy, breads, rice and all the foods that we oh, so love is gone as well...all that stuff was developed with agriculture.

All in all, the paleo diet would require a huge change in lifestyle.

The Caveman Diet- Fruits, Vegetables....Protein....Repeat....

Now, you are probably wondering why someone would want to torment themselves with this, right?

Well, although science hasn't proven that the Paleo or grain free diet actually has anything to do with arthritis, it is a fairly well known fact that you would be healthier if you diet consisted of meat, veggies and fruits. Your blood pressure would likely go down. Your cholesterol would likely be normal.

But the more likely reason would be that your diet is so clean, you body wouldn't have to spend it energy and resources trying to constantly detoxify your body of all the processed foods and sugar that you stick into it.

And as far as weight loss is concerned, I doubt that anyone would debate that if you dropped that 6 pack of cokes, fast food and twinkies daily regimen, then chances are very good that you would likely drop weight very quickly.

And chances are also good that if you are dropping weight quickly, this would be a huge boost to morale and you may even experience the placebo effect of getting somewhere quick (remember that size 0 bathing suit?)

Think about it this way for a second....

How much weight do you think you could lose if you killed all the sugar (ketchup has sugar in it...so does marinara....so does peanut butter...), drop kicked breads and pasta, and kung-fu-ed all the food you would typically buy in a bag and replaced it with fresh vegetables and fruits and meats?

The answer is an astonishing amount...very very quickly...

But it won't be fun...you will likely find a void in your life that needed to be filled (food is pretty much the meaning for existence for a good part of society)...and chances are you would be miserable.

And my two month foray into my inner caveman proved one thing to me- food is pretty god-danged important and a life centered exclusively of fruits, vegetables and chicken ain't necessarily my idea of a good time.

Never mind all the parties I spent watching my friends doing drunken renditions of "jukebox hero" karaoke style while I quietly nursed by paleo friendly glass of water and wondered why the heck I thought that was such a cool song.....

And while I managed to drop down to the weight I was when I was in high school some 20 years ago, I found myself actually wondering what was the point? A couple compliments here and there? For the six pack that I was sporting?

By the way, I am not the only one who has seen this kind of radical change with the caveman diet. Here is a blog that is basically a diet diary of someone on the diet.

I eventually found a gentler, kinder lifestyle diet that was a more evolved paleo diet, put back on some of the weight (but not all) pre-paleo and am happy to report that I am back to being able to join the rest of world again when I eat at restaurants.

...and "juke box hero" karaoke style is once again cool...

But here is my question.....If a Caveman suddenly plopped down into our society today....Do you think that he would go Paleo?

The Truth About Genital Warts

April 7th 2010 18:55
So, you have found that you have genital warts (or HPV) and have hit google looking for answers....

Can you effectively treat genital warts?

Are there any natural remedies to removing genital warts?

Will they go away on their own?

Before I get into answering these questions, understand that HPV is probably the most contracted sexual disease out there. It is highly contagious and can be contracted even when you are wearing protection because the genital warts can be found around the genitalia as well as on or (in the case of females) in.

And contrary to all the bunk and myths that you read online concerning natural remedies to treating genital warts (or warts even), there isn't a "cure" for them. In other words, once you get them, you got them for life. Until doctors determine a cure for the common cold, chances are very good that there will be no cure because the HPV strain is a virus. By the way, this is the same case for warts as well....

The reason why so many believe that there are natural remedies for treating genital warts is because they can go away on their own.

Let me explain....

Just like Herpes (or even a cold), they tend to manifest themselves whenever your immune system is down. When this happens, your body, which can normally contain the virus via the immune system, relents and the warts start to show up.

Because of this, genital warts will typically pop up in times when you are the sickest and the body can't fight it off. This also means that when you get better, they may go away on their own.

The best line of defense for preventing genital warts is abstinence of course. But, that probably won't happen unless you plan on becoming a nun or a hermit. The second best option out there (for women only) is gardisil which removes the risk of contracting HPV.

Preventing contraction is especially important for a woman because some of the HPV strains can cause cervical cancer.

If you already have HPV, the best thing you can do to reduce outbreaks is to eat and do things that boost your immune system.

Regular exercise is one of those things....

Of course, there are other vitamins and minerals you can load up on that will boost up your immune system such as L-custeine, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Zinc, and finally B vitamins and C.

Treatment for genital wars falls into 3 categories, none of which should be considered fail proof.

1.Prescription or topical treatments that will damage and destroy the wart....

2.Surgical Methods to remove wart tissue...

3.Biological methods that actually will target the virus.

In this blog, I intend to write about all things health. This includes most of the "alternative" health treatments out there and will showcase home remedies as well as homeopathy, herbalogist remedies, acupuncture and all the other things deemed "kooky" by established medicine. In addition to this, expect "greener" living ideas for health and fitness and wellness tips as well.

I am more concerned with the reasons why something happens because I believe
