Health and Beauty - May 2010

The first tri-mester with my first was absolutely brutal but it was a cake walk compared to the third. I was already several days late. My back ached, my feet stayed swollen and sore and I was having trouble sleeping at night. In the end, I had to be medically induced (aka scheduled induction) after a week. I swore that I would not have another child. Of course I did a couple years later but this time things were a little different, thanks in large part to a friend that introduced me to the wonders of acupressure and how it can help bring on labor naturally AND make labor less intense and safer than normal labor induction techniques. I also found out I was not alone in terms of delivering late. It is estimated that 70% of all newborns are late arrivals.

So what is Acupressure?

Acupressure is similar to acupuncture except you stimulate blood flow through pressure points rather than using needles. It is one of the safest methods used to induce labor and has absolutely no side effects. It encourages contractions and directs your blood flow to where it needs to be (your uterus). There are simply no other natural methods for labor induction than acupressure.

2 Acupressure points that will help with labor induction

There are several points that you can learn that will help with labor contractions and that will also help with relieving pain. Here are two that you can start practicing right now:

Make your labor shorter with the Big and High Point- This point is located between your achilles heel and right below your ankle bone. Massage the area. It is said that this point will help encourage your baby to make the trip down toward your pelvis.

Strengthen weak contractions with the 3 Yin Crossing- Another problem that many women have during labor is weak contractions. Weak contractions can result in a much longer labor. It is on your leg, by your calf muscle. You can locate this point by going about a hands width up from your ankle, right on the inside of your leg. It should be easy to locate as this area will be more tender than the surrounding areas.

There are of course many other ways to bring on labor naturally but none are as proven as acupressure nor as safe. To take a look at the other ways to induce labor, please check out my site, How to Induce Labor Naturally

Usually, constipation is caused by diet and sedentary lifestyle...

There are several reasons why you may feel constipated. And in order to fix this problem, you will need to rule out the rare cases and make sure that your constipation is caused by diet and lifestyle. For example, if you have diabetes, then chances are likely that you have experienced either diarrhea or constipation. If it isn't a condition such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, then fixing your constipation should be easy. You simply change your diet and lifestyle.

Diabetes and those with kidney & thyroid issues can be affected by constipation

Most diabetics suffer from constipation. The reason why is actually the same reason why kidney patients and those who have hypo or hyperthyroidism are likely to be constipated; Diabetics, with their blood sugar spikes actually damage the nerves in their intestinal walls. This causes the food to either pass too quickly causing diarrhea or too slowly causing constipation.

Prescription drugs could cause constipation

Because so many of the population relies on prescription drugs, constipation is a very common side effect. In a lot of drugs, diarrhea and constipation are two of the most common symptoms. The reason for this is how your body breaks down the drug...in a lot of cases, the nervous system is affected and your food either comes out too quickly or too slowly.

Constipation can also be caused by the foods you eat...

If you aren't diabetic, and don't have thyroid or kidney issues, then it is likely that constipation will all boil down to your diet. Vegetarians are hardly ever affected by constipation. The reason is that they get more than enough fiber in their diet. And if your everyday diet consists mainly of meats and potatoes, then your fiber intake could be seriously lacking. Studies have shown that just in the last 100 years, our fiber intake has decreased by nearly 50% The recommended fiber intake for an adult is 30 grams of fiber. But even this doesn't compare to what we ate 100 years ago . Double the fiber recommendation after you have gotten accustomed to eating more fiber.

If you don't drink enough water, you may become constipated...

Even being slightly dehydrated can cause constipation. Water is needed to pass waste from your body. If you are dehydrated, the stools will stay in your body longer and come out harder. Drink half your weight in water (in ounces) daily. If you weigh 100 pounds, you should be getting 50 ounces of water a day.

Lack of exercise could cause constipation

Most Americans don't get anywhere near the amount of exercise they need. Waste passes through the body quicker when you are exercise because you are stimulating the body and forcing more blood throughout your body. Runners typically don't get constipated.

If you are suffering from constipation, the good news is that it is usually an easy fix. And provided that you aren't having an issue with it as a side effect and it is solely because of diet, then the good news is that it can be fixed. If you need constipation help, chances are good that it will all boil down to your diet.

Constipation means that a person has three or fewer bowel movements in a week. The stool can be hard and dry. Sometimes it is painful to pass. At one time or another, almost everyone gets constipated. In most cases, it lasts a short time and is not serious.

It should be considered no secret that the majority of type 2 diabetes sufferers have issues due to being overweight. And while many will be willing to simply take insulin as a treatment for the rest of their lives, many now know that if they were able to find a diet in which they could lose weight, they could possibly be able to win the battle against diabetes. And one of those diets that we are going to discuss could possibly get you "there", that will not only possibly help you lose weight and control your diabetes but also lower your blood pressure and cholesterol. This diet, the paleo diet (caveman diet), claims that if you can commit, you will slow down aging, lower cholesterol, lose weight quickly AND prevent diabetes .

Eat like a Caveman...

What we commonly refer to as "dinner" is really only about 10,000 years old I know that that sounds like a long time but in terms of evolution, it is nothing. Before that, man was primarily a hunter and gatherer, killing what he could catch and foraging for edible vegetables and fruits. Advocates of the caveman diet will tell you that that is exactly how we should be eating today.

The irony to this is that most of what we eat is so far from the paleo diet that the paleo diet menu may seem almost foreign. No sugars, no flour, no "modern day" vegetables such as corn and potatoes. If you could answer this, then you would tell me some fruits and vegetables and some meat. And in essence, that is the paleo diet Condiments and marinara sauces are also off the table because they are loaded with sugar... . so is peanut butter, although many paleo dieters will cheat on this food.

What can you expect to happen?

People who have been able to stick with this diet have reported lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, more energy, a better feeling overall and rapid weight loss. Weight loss along without any spikes in insulin caused by sugar also means the body won't have to work so hard producing insulin ... which means that the diabetic in a lot of cases can eventually produce a normal amount of insulin themselves without having to rely on a needle.

The paleo diet isn't for everyone though.(check out my post...would a caveman do it if he were alive today..) The biggest issue that most diabetics and overweight people will have to overcome is the limiting factor of this diet. Chances are good that if you went on this diet, you would literally have to empty out your refrigerator and start all over again.

Diabetic testimonials for the Paleo Diet

I had a heart attack 2 years ago, I'm only 51, my glucose levels were out of control, my sugar was either too high or too low, I was about 15 lbs overweight. I was exercising 20 or 30 minutes a day on my eliptical machine in front of the t.v. I honestly thought I was eating healthy and balanced, but I could never loose 1 pound.

...my glucose levels were often in the 180 to 225 range. Sometimes it would drop to 51 and I felt that the end was near.

I saw changes in my glucose levels in the first week on the diet. My morning levels were coming down. I cut down on my meds after the first week because I didn't need so much anymore.
Now I take only 5mg of Glipizide in the evening, and still take the Byetta shots morning and evening. But I'm sure I will be cutting that down soon.

Even a Short 3 Day Juice Fast Can Help You "DETOXIFY"
Fasting and Cleansing is important because it helps your body to release the toxins stored in your body and fat. There is a good reason for this . In this day and age, we are exposing our bodies to toxins everywhere; from the food we eat to the air we breathe to the stuff we absorb on our bodies like deodorant and perfume. The good news is that even a short term fast, like a 3 day juice fast, can help to repair the damage we do daily to our bodies.

Why You Should Fast

Digestion requires perhaps the most energy and resources which means that while we eat, our bodies can't focus on eliminating toxins in the food. Anything that the liver and kidneys can't filter out gets pumped into the bloodstream and eventually ends up in our fat. Also, digestion creates an inflammation source which means that the body has to use even more energy to deal with that as well.

When you fast, you essentially give the body an extra resource and in turn, the body does a house cleaning so to speak.. Your Immune system works better as well, cleaning up points of inflammation.

What fasting does is cut off the incessant influx of toxins allowing your body to handle toxins already in your body.... In some cases, a longer fast can actually take care of the toxins in fat stores as they are released as energy.

3 day fast or 7 day fast...which is better?

The biggest problem with fasting is that most of us don't have the time to actually do a fast The better option instead would be to take an extra day off and simply go on a 3-day juice fast. You won't see optimum results, but you will feel a difference..

The most ideal fast would be a 7 day fast but chances are time constraints and a job could hold you back. The difference between a 3 day fast and a 7 day fast all boils down to how deep your body has to go into fast stores. The fat is released into the system along with the toxins. In turn, the liver processes it and pushes it out of the body .

In summation, there is no doubt that fasting and cleansing is important for those who want to feel better and basically give their body a chance to catch up. If time is an issue for you, then a 3-day fast may be the best option. But if you really want to get the best results, a 7 day fast is typically much, much better.

There are some who believe that arthritis (even rheumatoid arthritis) is directly connected with what we eat

There are some who believe that the reason for joint pain as well as arthritis including the highly debilitating rheumatoid arthritis has to do with what we put in our bodies. And while many people will scoff at the notion that somehow diet is the culprit between alleviating arthritis pain or having to take medication to prevent the pain, the reality is that what we eat, in fact, could factor in to how arthritis affects us. The paleo diet could relieve arthritic pain...

Summer is just about upon us and what that means is fewer clothes to cover up any excess weight we have gained over the winter months. And for anyone who is looking to quickly drop pounds and reduce the size of their midsection, then I can think of no other diet that is more effective than the paleo diet.

Skin Tag Pictures
Example of skin tags found on the arm
If you have a skin tag, the good news is that it is most likely not cancerous. And while it may be annoying to look at, there are ways to remove them. . The bad news is that if you don't have health insurance, the cost of having more than a few removed will start to get expensive. Other than seeking professional help, there are other strategies to removing a skin tag at home though. As with most of them, you most likely can find them in your kitchen pantry and if not, a short trip to the grocery will suffice.
