I can think of one way – Michael Jackson. But if the likes of Michael Jackson (well, all the Jackson clan really) and Jocelyn Wildenstein aren’t enough reasons to dissuade you, John Ewoldt of Star Tribune has asked dermatologists, plastic surgeons and cosmetics expert about 5 procedures and products that cost much less and are possibly more effective than a facelift.

Sunscreen
The most face-saving product, sunscreen protects the skin from aging before its time, not to mention it reduces the risks of skin cancer. People with lighter complexions should opt for at least 30 protection while others should go for 15 but all sunscreens should state they protect the skin against UVA and UVB rays.

A good skin regime
Cleansing, moisturising, protecting and correcting should be a part of your daily skin regime. You don’t have to go for high-end cleansers that promise everything with their extravagant price tag when Cetaphil for around AUD$10 a bottle is a gentle cleanser that works just fine and has been voted by many beauty experts as one of the best cleansers on the market. Choose fragrance-free moisturisers and, if possible, already come with sun protection and includes alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids and antioxidants. Retin A is still considered most effective when reducing wrinkles, smoothing skin and stimulating collagen.

Chemical peels
Peels are effective in fading wrinkles, age spots and also stimulate collagen, taking 10 years off your face. There are 3 types of chemical peels -

AHA peels is a milder formula that require more sessions than the other two but are ideal for those who expect faster recovery. Each procedure takes only 10 minutes and without anesthesia. Following the treatment, there are some temporary inconveniences such as dryness, redness and skin flaking so best to lock yourself up in the house for a day or two – unless it’s Halloween.

TCA peels normally takes up to 15 minutes to apply and often requires a pre-treatment solution through AHA or Retin-A creams. It works on other areas such as the neck and, depending on your skin, your doctor may adjust the depth of surface peeling which may take more than one session. Temporary side-effects include mild stinging sensation, swelling and discomfort which should disappear within a week of the treatment.

Phenol peels are a more aggressive form of treatment and is not advisable for those with darker skin or people with heart ailments. A throbbing sensation will be felt during the treatment but a pain reliever is given to ease the discomfort. Redness all over the face may be experienced but should subside within 2 weeks. While the procedure takes at least an hour and recovery may last for more than a month, the effects are longer-lasting than the AHA and TCA peels.

Cost is appox AUD$130 per treatment (for a certain number of sessions) to AUD$500 or more. For more on chemical peels, click here.

Laser Treatment
Laser Treatments such as Laser Facial Resurfacing can remove wrinkles, tighten skin, even out skin discolouration, smooth rough skin and improve the look of acne and/or chicken pox scars. A laser is a beam of light radiation, delivering intense energy to specific problem areas of the skin, destroying the skin’s surface layer and exposing the dermis to stimulate the growth of new collagen fibres. As the wound heals, a softer, less wrinkled skin emerges. The treatment is usually done under local anesthetic and can last from a few minutes to at least an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated. After treatment, your face may be covered with antibiotic treatment and a dressing may be put on the treated area. Temporary side effects may include swollen skin that may ooze within 2 weeks of the treatment, skin redness that can last up to 12 weeks and scabs forming as part of the healing process.

Cost is $300-$1,200 per treatment. For more info, click here.

Botox
Botox will always have a bad connotation for me after seeing hundreds of frozen celebrity faces in magazines. It reduces lines on your face by blocking muscle contractions that cause wrinkles. Within a week of being injected with Botox, the lines and wrinkles on the face start to disappear but, because the nerve fibres eventually generate, the results last only between 3 to 6 months and repeated injections are required to maintain the effect. With continued use, the effects may start to last longer.

Cost : Doctors charge per unit with a typical botox treatment including 30 units at appox $AUD20-$26 per unit. For more info, click here.

Review of new mascaras

August 19th 2008 02:19
If you’re like me, you’re a marketer’s dream because you get sucked into whatever ads are on TV, featuring beautiful people waving their shiny hair, glowing in their flawless complexion and flashing a thousand-watt smile. And before you know it, you’ve spent your hard-earned money on beauty products that end up going to your bin by the end of the week. So thank goodness for those experts who take the time out to review and critique up and coming products in the ever-growing beauty market.

Kay Montano, a makeup artist in London is a sceptic when it comes to many new trends, believing that most, if not all, beauty companies, are better at marketing their products than actually creating an innovative item worth keeping. Here, she rated 5 new mascaras :

Estee Lauder Turbolash All-Effects Motion Mascara (bloody hell, can the name be any longer?) – AUD$84
Rating : 9/10
Estee Lauder Turbolash All-Effects mascara

Montano praises the easy application of the product without the clogging and mess, whilst creating thicker, separate lashes.

Chanel Exceptional Mascara – AUD$60
Rating : 9/10
Chanel Exceptional Mascara

The wand has alternating strips of comb and brush which you’re supposed to turn as you apply so that the comb covers the lashes with the colour while the brush eliminates any gunk while separating the lashes. Apparently, this has become a fast favourite among the community.

Lancome Oscillation Mascara – AUD$90
Rating: 7/10
Lancome Oscillation Mascara

This first vibrating mascara is battery operated designed to wrap up lashes up to 360 degrees with 7000 micro-oscillations per minute. The product was deemed only OK as it did not go on evenly on the lashes. And for that price, you’d expect it to be more than OK – despite the vibrating factor which, when you think about it, seems a little odd and…useless to me.

Givenchy Phenom’eyes Mascara – AUD$52
Rating: 7/10
Givenchy Phenom'eyes Mascara

The mascara has a thick black wand with a round (think miniature black tree), bristled edge to reach the innermost corner of the lashes. While apparently brilliant on the lower lashes, the wand was a little tricky to use to be applied properly and effectively.

Loreal Double Extension Beauty Tubes – AUD$30
Rating: 4/10
Loreal Double Extension Beauty Tube mascara

Given the worst rating out of the 5 mascaras, Montano’s main gripe with this combo mascara (one end a white gunk of brush designed to condition and separate lashes while the other end is the topcoat to add volume and colour) is that the white basecoat isn’t concealed properly, without adding layers and layers of the topcoat that made her look like Jordan. Ew. If this product is anything like the Loreal Volume Shocking mascara, then I’d have to agree. Walking around with people staring oddly at your lashes, thinking a bird pooped on it doesn’t do anything for your self-esteem.

If you want to forego spending heaps of money on these ‘new and innovative products’, then stick to a class, non-clogging mascara. Montano highlights that the beauty industry’s secret to perfect lashes is to apply one coat of mascara to the root of the lashes, zigzag the wand up toward the tips, separate the lashes using a clean wand then repeating the whole process until the desired effect is achieved.

It seems every time I open a gossip magazine these days, another starlet has opted for plastic surgery – on their nose, lips, buttocks, whatever - to the point that I can’t tell the difference when I do one of those quizzes where you have to guess which actress the lips/nose/eyebrows belong to. Well, a word of warning : below is a list of celebrities who probably frequent their plastic surgeon’s office more than they would their bathroom with disastrous and/or unnatural results –

jocelyn wildenstein

Jocelyn Wildenstein
What do you do when your husband cheats on you? Simple. Spend 2 million pounds on cosmetic surgery to make your face look like a cross between a dog and a feral cat. Honestly, how can this woman not look at herself in the mirror and not be tempted to scratch herself? This goes to show that having a lot of money doesn’t necessarily buy you taste – or beauty.

Michael Jackson surgery

Michael Jackson
What else can anyone say? Prince of Pop has become Noseless White Lady.

Latoya Jackson surgery

Latoya Jackson
What is it with the Jacksons asking for a ‘triangle’ nose? Can they even breathe with that? It seems all the more tragic when you see Latoya’s before photo.

Donatella Versace

Donatella Versace
OK. I haven’t seen pictures of her before she had plastic surgery so for all I know, she really does look like a chimpanzee with long white hair. But come on, no one besides Angelina Jolie, was born with those lips. Surely?

Fergie surgery

Fergie
Oh Fergie-ferg – looks good in music videos but has been dubbed ‘Fugly’ by many a male artist. I remember those innocent days when I laughed at your appalling dance skills next to Martika in Kids Incorporated. But at that time, I thought you were really cute. But looking at you now, it’s so hard to imagine we’re of similar age because you honestly look like what my grandmother would have looked if she lived to the age of 80.

Joan Rivers Surgery

Joan Rivers
Same kind of pose, same face? Not! Those arched eyebrows, the slanted eyes, the pinched nose, the mountains for cheekbones and the swollen lips. In a book, this heroine would have been described as strikingly beautiful but you can’t say the same for Joan Rivers, can you?

Lil Kim surgery

Li'l Kim
Maybe her transformation isn’t as bad as the others on this list but I felt compelled to put this in, simply for her fake no-so-li'l bazungas spilling out of that horrible horrible dress.

Mickey Rourke surgery

Mickey Rourke
I had a huge crush on Mickey because my childhood sweetheart looked like him – before the surgery, mind you. Alright, so his demise in the looks department may have been a result of old age, booze, drugs, weight gain but the surgery didn’t help either.

Pamela Anderson surgery

Pamela Anderson
Admittedly, as pretty as she was before, she would never have become famous if it weren’t for those hot air balloons on her chest and the plethora of porn videos she did with her exes. And I guess if self-respect isn’t on her life’s priority lists, she’s on the right track.

Priscilla Presley surgery

Priscilla Presley
I guess the profits of Graceland contributed to Priscilla Presley’s new ‘puffer-fish’ look, huh?

Olay's Hits & Misses

February 27th 2008 01:49
I’m the kind of person who, when she discovers a good product, then has to try all the other beauty products endorsed by the same brand – and I still think I should have received some kind of loyalty reward from Clinique & Dermalogica! For the past one and a half years, I’ve been obsessed with Olay. The good news is Olay products aren’t as expensive as Clinique or Dermalogica. The bad news is, like with everything else, Olay has its hits & misses. Here are mine -

Would you have plastic surgery?

November 1st 2007 01:53
Michelle Pfeiffer was recently voted by US OK! readers as the #1 woman celebrity who has become more beautiful with age. Ms Pfeiffer says that the key to such a timeless beauty is simple – get enough sleep, eat well and exercise appropriately. She also adds that she is not interested in plastic surgery, claiming “All the plastic surgery in the world can’t stop you getting older”. So should we assume that she never had plastic surgery?

Michelle Pfeiffer - an ageless beauty

The discussion I had with my work colleagues over whether or not to believe that she did NOT have plastic surgery (with most insisting that she did judging by how the sides of her nose stretched when she smiles- whatever that means) then led to the question : Would you have plastic surgery, if money wasn't an issue? And by this, I mean for shallow reasons, as in you took one look at yourself in the mirror and thought, "Hmm...that area needs a bit of a nip and tuck."

How much do you spend to look good?

October 25th 2007 01:50
According to a research conducted by Co-Operative Insurance, an average woman will spend £180,000 on skin care, hair and nail products, spa treatments, perfumes, cosmetics and dietary regimes, all for the sake of looking good and appearing younger. This is money, Co-Operative Insurance insists, that is better off as a contribution towards retirement and when you think about it, that’s a whopping AUD$412,000!!!

My sister had a haircut the other week, full of hope before she went into the hair salon because she had been dreaming about the Posh Spice bob for weeks now, thinking the hairstyle would give her that glamorous and sophisticated look that Posh is so much known for. Unfortunately, sis didn’t take into account that her face shape is wide and round and the result was akin to a pumpkin head with a bob hairstyle and longer scraggly strands at the front.

I’m sure my sister isn’t the only one who’s realised too late (and $60 poorer) that certain hairstyles just don’t do anything for them. I remember insisting on the Kelly Taylor look – the short, wavy bob that made Jennie Garth look girly and fun in 90210- and realising afterwards that the haircut only made me look like my dad. Magazines giving you tips on which hairstyles best suit your face shape and going by your hairdresser’s suggestions aren’t enough for me so I was glad when I came across Beauty Riot Instant Makeover.

Whether you came across them by accident, your favourite celeb swears by them or your friend strongly recommends them, there are some beauty tricks that actually work and don't break your budget. Here are some of mine, what's yours?

Body model
1. This one I found by accident when I had a slight shaving mishap and had to stay in the bathroom for a while. Directly after showering, rub moisturiser all over your body and stay inside the bathroom for 10-15 minutes (brush your teeth, wash your face, sit in the toilet, etc). I find that the warm, damp air makes my skin absorb the moisture, making my skin softer and more supple.

Bizarre Beauty Products - from Japan

October 2nd 2007 01:24
I’ve noticed people have stopped asking me for advice on how to lose the weight they’ve put on during winter because they hate hearing that dreaded word : exercise. So I’ve decided that the next time they ask me for tips on how to tone and shape up for summer, I’ll refer them to some bizarre beauty products from Japan I discovered through uniquedaily.com and have fun seeing which ones would be gullible enough to purchase one of these online-

Jawline Slimmer
Getting conscious of your double chin that you make an effort to always keep your chin up? The Jawline Slimmer can take the excess fat from your massive jowls. No exercising but it does involve some sweating. The aluminium guard is placed under your jaws and under your chin. All you do is add water and wait for the sweat to come out like you would in a sauna and voila, slimmer jaws!

Make up Trends Spring/Summer '07/08

September 25th 2007 02:30
STARS IN YOUR EYES
Bobbi Brown Metallic Collection
Make your eyes shimmer, sparkle and dance and stock up on the range of metallic eyeshadow because it’s all about bringing focus to your eyes this spring/summer season. Opt for lighter metallic shades like white, pink or gold during the day and more dramatic shades like purple, blue and forest green at night. Apply a lighter shade of metallic eyeshadow over the entire eyelid, working into the inner corners of the eye and use a darker shade into the crease of the lid. Line the inner sides of your eye with a black or dark brown eyeliner for a smouldering effect.
