Oscar-winner Halle Berry has joined the ranks of Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwen Stefani, becoming the latest celebrity to sign with cosmetic giant Coty for a new fragrance. Berry was chosen for her ‘iconic beauty’ and her touch of mystery. Her new fragrance will hit stores sometime in 2009.
Halle Berry

It seems every three months, we get news that another celebrity has come out with their new perfume. But which other celebrity do you think should jump on the fragrance bandwagon and which one, if they come out with their own fragrance, would you buy? As for me, I’m putting my hand up for George Clooney which I am still scratching my head about. I am not fond of Clooney’s movies, his acting ability and I don’t even think he has remarkable physical features (but then I’m in that dismal 1% who think Brad Pitt’s looks are overrated) but I would willingly buy his perfume for my hubby. Why? Maybe because he’s charismatic and reminds me of the likes of Rock Hudson, Cary Grant and Clark Gable. For myself, I’d probably buy a fragrance endorsed by Angelina Jolie – simply because it will, no doubt, smell weird.

Jennifer Lopez Glow
5. Glow by Jennifer Lopez
Fresh, Sexy, Fun - Glow was born in 2002 when Jennifer Lopez apparently walked out of her shower, pointed to her own bathrobe and said, “This. I want it (the perfume) to smell like this”. The scent features a blend of orange blossom, soft musk, pink grapefruit and vanilla and has been said to smell like refreshing floral soap that doesn’t overwhelm. In its first year, it raked in over US$100 million in sales and despite releasing six other scents since then, including Glow ‘spin-offs’, the original Glow remains a top-seller with sales of US$47.1 million at the end of 2006.

Britney Spears Curious
4. Curious by Britney Spears
With notes such as Louisiana magnolia, golden Anjou pear, lotus flower, jasmine and sandalwood, Curious, curiously enough, smells nothing like musky trash. Released in 2004, it was the number one fragrance across department stores and was voted Best Woman’s Fragrance by Fragrance Foundation in 2005, raking in US$55.4 million in sales by 2006. Methinks the girl would have better luck sticking to perfumes than reviving her music career if her latest song and live performance were anything to go by.

Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely
3. Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker
SJP’s first fragrance and released in 2005, Lovely’s notes include lavender, orchid, amber, apple martini and musk. Ultra feminine but without that overwhelming sharp floral scent that really goes up your nose and gives you symptoms of hay fever, Lovely just beat Britney Spears’ Curious with US$57 million in sales in 2006.

Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds
2. White Diamonds by Elizabeth Taylor
White Diamonds continues to be listed among the top ten-selling fragrances (not just celebrity fragrances), every year since it was created in 1991 and earned US$60.7 million in sales in its 15th anniversary. With a blend of Amazon lily, Turkish rose, oakmoss and sandalwood, White Diamonds is a sensual, sophisticated and feminine scent to Ms Taylor encourages us to ‘wear it anywhere you would wear diamonds”.

Sean John Unforgivable
1. Unforgivable by Sean Combs
Now, this is a total surprise to me. A scent endorsed by a joke of a singer-rapper whose slogan for the product is “Life without passion is Unforgivable” and whose reason for endorsing the scent is because “There are millions of men taking my lead, and I have to take them to the promised land of sexy”, is the number one best-selling perfume in 2006, raking in US$74.9 million in sales. Notes feature tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, juniper and sandalwood. I’ve never had a whiff of Unforgivable but I really hope it is a genuinely nice scent because I refuse to believe there are millions of men out there who want to emulate someone like P Diddy, Puff Daddy, Dee Dee Do, or whatever he’s calling himself these days.

The Essence of Kate

August 20th 2007 02:50
When I first saw fuzzy pictures of Kate Moss snorting cocaine, I thought Aha! Another supermodel whose career will go straight down the toilet. Then I realised what era I’m living in when Paris Hilton walking demurely in front of flashing cameras after her stint in jail or Britney in her lack of panties are considered hard-hitting news. Now I seem to see her (Kate, not Britney, pantyless or otherwise) everywhere – on TV, billboards, video clips, magazines, websites and at one point, even at a London display. Nowadays, when people talk about Kate, it’s like they’re gossiping about their glamorous next-door neighbour.

Kate Moss Fragrance

But if you think or you’re hoping Kate will just up and leave, you may as well hie yourself off to a bush in the country and feed on your toenails because Kate will infiltrate our TV screens, billboards, magazines and websites like never before when she launches her own new fragrance, called – wait for it – Kate.

With notes like orange blossom absolute, magnolia, lily of the valley, rose petal and sandalwood, amongst other things, Kate will be a pink-coloured floral musk which promises to capture the good and bad sides of the waif-like model in a small bottle. Kate assures potential buyers that she was very hands-on with the producing of the fragrance. More hands-on than JLO who walked out of the shower pointing to herself in her bathrobe, saying, “This. I want it to smell like this” and Glow was born? Surely not!

Britney Spears Curious
Curious to find out how Britney's career will unfold in the near future? I am!
Yup. Kate’s jumped on the celebrity fragrance bandwagon, joining the growing multitude of celebrities (ie Sarah Jessica Parker, Kylie Minogue, David Beckham, Sean Puffy, P Diddy, Do A Dee-Dee – whatever he’s calling himself these days) who have lent their names and faces to fragrances since the massive success of JLo’s butt, Glow. They've all decided if we can’t have their money and lifestyle, us plebs can convince ourselves we are so much more connected to our idols by smelling like them. With 23% of the top 100 fragrances sold in the US each year being celebrity-endorsed, the list of celebrity fragrances naturally won’t end with Kate. Within the next months, expect scents by the likes of Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera to become the #1 item on many a young girl’s Xmas wish list. And if Britney, who has lost all credibility when she dropped her undies, still manages to top the celebrity perfume sales charts with Curious, methinks it will only be a matter of time before a rehabilitated Lindsay Lohan comes up with her own essence of skank.

Kate comes out in Europe and Asia in September but will be released in US early next year. It’s expected to rake in 65 million pounds in sales within the next two years, but she’s not stopping there. There are talks she’s even producing her own skincare range. Now you can smell AND look like Kate!

Have you ever bought a perfume endorsed by a celebrity?

Roll On Perfume - Aveda Dune

August 16th 2006 07:11
Aveda - Dune Primrose Aroma Concentrate Parfum

This tiny bottle of goodness cannot be fully appreciated until you are trapped in a small confined public space, and somebody releases a lethal dose of digestive gas and having the fart python creep slowly and silently into the deepest cavities of your nostrils.

In such situationes, we must keep in mind that it is not the intention of the gasser to invert the stomachs of the surrounding population. He/she has probably held it in for as long as they could, and a gas overload in one's guts can cause some people to spontaneously combust when coming in contact with heat. It is for this reason that we must endure occasional bursts of baked bean goodness in uncomfortable environments, and why we cannot go without one of these delightful little roll-on perfumes.

Aveda's Dune Primrose Aroma is cleverly compacted into a tiny tube that could pass for lip gloss. When applied to the pulse points, it emits a pleasing fragrance with enough strength to last hours, to leave a prominent trail, without the nausea that many concentrate parfums inflict.

The best part is the discretion in application. So small, and smooth you can glide it all over yourself with a quick flick of the hand. The strong scent fends off any unpleasantness without embarrassing anyone around you. It smells so natural it can even be passed off as pheromones (if you close your eyes and imagine really really ridiculously hard).

The tiny bottle is a bit costly, at around $39.95. However, despite the small quantity, one batch can last years.

Dolly Girl by Anna Sui

July 18th 2006 03:05
Insert Title Here

Dolly Girl by Anna Sui is fresh, young, immature, and innocent without the burden of depth, and without the sickening sweet flavours that Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson launches to the younger market. It was my own pre-adulthood favourite. So when I saw piles and piles of it stacked up and untouched in the Myer bargain bin during its stocktake sale, I was aghast and saddened that my childhood sweetie has been neglected by the masses.

Estee Lauder Youth Dew Amber Nude - from esteelauder.com

Seeing the image of this homely bottle, I forget the reason I even sampled this fragrace. The potent nausea that had hit me initally still remains in my handbag, fusing into the leather, refusing to evaporate. In a vain attempt, I have transferred everything from my first bag to another, the smell still lingers on my index finger from prodding the sample during the process.

The newest fragrance by Burberry has me eyeing it suggestively everytime I see it. The only reason I have not purchased this little pretty is because I've long ago decided to settle for only one signature fragrance (nothing has topped Dior's Pure Poison for me so far). Friends of mine who wear this have had me sniffing at them every time they come near; I have been reduced to a dribbling hound by this beautiful number.

Scents of Celebrity

May 9th 2006 02:42
It doesn't take the keenest observers to notice that celebrity fragrances have hit our shelves with a bang. Everyone from Britney Spears to Donald Trump have released their own signature scent. The enormous success of these fragrances (Britney Spears' "Curious" was the most profitable Launch in New Zealand) display a huge market for these fragrances. Some will only approve to young adults, but others are actually quite decent.
Here are a few...
