Guide to Cleansers on a Budget
June 23rd 2006 03:09
The simple act of cleaning your face has never been more complicated, as wave after wave of new products are introduced to our shelves. Having tried purchasing just any old cleanser and slapping it on my face, I found that the results can be distrastrous. It's easy to find a good, non-irritating cleanser, but they usually will cost you your very pants. Spending your very pants on a dirt remover is never a good idea.
It is best to avoid products with alcohol, fragrance, or sodium laureth sulfate (the stuff that makes it bubble). Unfortunately alot of low-cost supermarket products do contain these ingredients, but some of them are more gentle than others, and aren't half bad. Here are a few cheap cleansers on a budget:
Olay Total Effects Anti-Aging Anti-Blemish Cleanser: $12.95
This is from a relatively new line launched by Olay to tackle both wrinkles and pimples. The smell and texture of the cleanser is great, and although results can vary (I didn't really get any instant effects), it is been sweeped off the shelves as we speak. Containing fragrance and alcohol, I wouldn't recommend it on skin which tends to be dry or sensitive.
Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser: $11.99
This gentle cleanser pumps right out of a bottle and doesn't attack the skin with as much vigour as its counterparts. Though containing alcohol, it also has Vitamin E and Chamomile to calm your skin down. However for those of us who prefer a squeaky clean after cleansing, the Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser probably will leave more moisturizing residue than desired.
Dove Essential Nutrients Creamy Foaming Cleanser: $7.19
This useful cleanser can double up as a gentle makeup remover. In fact, you don't even need to wet your face before applying it. This is an updated product from the old cream cleanser, it is easier to foam up and comes in a more convenient packaging. Priceline only charges $7.19 for a tube of this, it's a pretty good cleanser for under $10.
Clearasil Total Control Deep Pore Cream Cleanser: $12.95
This is is good for those who prefer a textured cleanser. The grains are not too rough on your skin and the cleanser doesn't tend to overdry. It contains menthol to give your skin that fresh, cool feeling, but it can irritate those with sensitive skin. It's ideal for oily skin with occasional breakouts.
Kosmea Clarifying Facial Wash: $20.95
I thought I'd include this even though it's slightly expensive. This liquid/gel cleanser does not contain alcohol, fragrance, or SLS, and is packed with fruit and plant extracts to sooth and cleanse the skin. However the packaging can be improved as the contents seem to dribble out so tight control is needed when applying. But this cleanser does leave your skin softer and smoother, and since only a small amount is needed each time, the price doesn't work out to be too bad.

what's up with alcohol in all these moisturizers?

I know what you mean Sisi, it's hard to squeeze in a routine with such a busy lifestyle. Lucky we're young enough to get away with it!
I wish they didn't have alcohol either Cibby, but it does have a disinfecting effect I suppose. Unfortunately alot of people don't react very well to it....!
