Hair Trends for Spring/Summer 2007

August 30th 2007 01:08
Like everyone else, I’ll be lining up outside a hair salon to hail the promise of extended sunshine and say goodbye to my boring, dark tired look that is winter. But before I do that, I thought I’d do some research to see what the experts say about what’s in for air this coming Spring/Summer.

Fringe, fringe, swoop

Whether they’re short, long, uneven or straight, fringe is here to stay. And I, for one, am getting sick of the tufts of baby hair crowning the top of my head so as much as I hate the thought of flipping my hair back to keep my fringe out of my eyes, I hate looking like I have wings at my temples more. There is a particular style of fringe I’m thinking of going for, called the Swoop Bang – long fringe gently combed to the side of the face with a little flick at the end. This look is a perfect, sophisticated, low-maintenance addition to any length of hair.

60s Glam is Back!

Hilary Duff

BIG hair, teased at the crown to create volume. You can either leave it out with a little flip at the bottom or tie it back in a bun (like Hilary Duff above). Top it off with a wide bright headband or headwrap and you have a hairstyle to complement those short bright swing dresses.

Sleek Ponytail

The sleek, high ponytail is also in for those with longer hair. With a full-bodied back and a bit of curl, your mane will bounce along merrily atop your shoulders when you do the kangaroo bop.

Crop and Bob

The shorter, the better, experts say. The best thing with this style is you don’t have to do much with it. You can tame it and comb it very close to your face – perfect for those with big, expressive eyes or you can just muss it up and make it as shaggy as you want.

For those who don’t want a crop too severe, you can opt for the bob that’s been made famous by the likes of Rihanna and Posh, called the Inverted Bob which suits any shape of face. The style is cut short at the nape but gradually grows longer towards the front with the ends curling just under the chin. I’ve seen this style on a lot of women walking out of the salon recently and is apparently very easy to maintain.

Bye bye, hair straightener

If you’re fond of your long hair and would shriek like one of those girls from ANTM when their locks have been chopped off, I have good news for you. Most of us have natural waves in our hair (some more so than others) and we spend a good ten minutes or more ironing them out with a hair straightener. But experts are saying to embrace them as the soft, loose, wavy style is in. Unless your hair is screaming ‘split ends!’, you don’t even need to go to a hair salon for this. All you need to do is invest in a good frizz-free product that won’t make your hair limp, lank and oily at the end of the day.

Hah! Glad to know I'll be trendy...I've the 'swoop bang' -- didn't know it had a name!. I love it now, but when I first got it, it was a tad annoying 'cos I kept brushing it out of my eye (and playing with it) -- i was told off MANY times "stop playing with your fringe!" <giggle...>

Yay for natural waves

It's like... back-to-school season here.

Maybe I should move to Australia so I get the extra summer months. Jokes.

I hate people with curly hair... it took me a year of curling irons and primping to get ANY wave at all, and to this day I still primp it to get more than a tiny turnup at the bottom. -.- Hair straighter than a ruler, blonde, thick, and fine. Thank gods it's not very long!

I think I'll go for the swoop, bang, but then maybe I'll just stick to the wig, don't want others getting jealous.

Oh, for beautiful hair, still it beats not having any.

Thanks, Aimz, love your hair on your pic.

Go Lara, swoop it, gurl!

Hi Dianna, ever since my grandmother put my hair in curlers and made me look like a bushy tree, I'd stayed away from curling irons. You're lucky with your straight straight hair. My hair is supposedly straight but it has so much frizz in it!

Stick to the wig, Katyzzz. It protects your real hair
PS. Thanks. Not as long as it used to be - that was pre-bleach and now it's not as healthy.

Hahaha, that swoop thingie looks straight out of the early 70s! Gives me flashbacks to junior high school when I had it myself.

Whaddya mean "lucky to have straight hair"?? I've been fighting my stick-straight hair most of my life....guess the grass is always greener, haha!

Hi D, if I had to take a pick - straight hair or curly hair? I'd pick straight hair hands down. And not because my hair is curly either. I used to have really straight hair but I guess, with age, all these 'tufts' came out and it looks horrible. Give me 'stick-straight' hair any day. You know what, speaking of past hairstyles, I really hope the permed fringe doesn't come back - ever again!!!

Yep it's definitely that time of year. For the last year and a half I've been growing my hair and it's now quite long. But I've got really fine hair, and it's almost a bit too long now. So I'm planning on getting the chop. I'm thinking I might go that cropped bob or something a little like the hairstyle Katie Holmes is sporting these days.

I eventually always come back to some version of the bob!!!

I'm lucky....in that I have curly hair that is easily straightened. Unfortunately it's not that nice gentle wave that Brittany is sporting....it's a bit more insane. Hence the straightening iron is my best friend.

I love the mod bobs, and the 'flick' (that's what we used to call it in the 70's - all the cool girls have 'flicks'!

Great post Aimzster.
Cheers

Hi Kylie, kewl! I'm not a great fan of Katie Holmes but I think her bob makes her look very sophisticated. I'm torn between chopping my whole hair off or leaving it this length but I'm definitely going for that swoop!

Hi Chic, hehehe don't worry. I don't think Brittany's 'waves' are all that natural. My hair is quite frizzy so I have to use the straightener a lot but it does make my hair really dry.

Unfortunately I have dead straight hair that does nothing but sit on top of my head I can't even curl it.
Oh wells. I do like the 60s look tho!

I have curly hair, but I've use the straightening iron on it because I prefer how it looks...I wouldn't mind trying for the less straight and more wavy look though.

Hi Amy, you and me both but as mentioned, have coils of baby hair around my temples. Will u be one of the ladies who'll step out with a mini swing dress, platforms and a headbanded bob?

Hi Mrs M, what hairstyle would that be?

Hi Nina, I'm curious. How long does it take to straighten curly hair?

My hair is layered, with the longest layers reaching just below my shoulders. To get it completely straight takes about 30-45 minutes, depending on how distracted I am at the time...
