Male Beauty: Ridiculously Good-Looking Men

really really ridiculously good looking?
There aren't many men whom I would consider beauties. Of course we come across a swarm of men who are handsome, adorable, charming, glamourous, enthralling....but few I would consider true beauties. Naturally, I approach this from an entirely superficial context. Being shallow is a self-indulgence one can't afford very often in the politically correct social cube we reside in today, I feel like a break.

As a blatant excuse to delve into visual profiles of beautiful men, I hereby present to you Bunbury's Top 5 Ridiculously Good-Looking Men. It's about curves, tone, bone structure, presence, and image. Oh, and I'm sure they're very nice fellas too....

Number 5: Jude Law

Hey Jude indeed. I would not have put this beautifully sculpted man at the number 5 spot if he wasn't so incredibly thin. Nevertheless, I never cease to admire the bone structure of this extraordinarily pretty lad. So he's a cheating scoundrel, who cares, when he's got the straightest nose in Hollywood. His brows arch delicately into his piercing eyes to produce an expression of exquisite intensity. A truly beautiful man, at least his upper half.

Number 4: Simon Baker
I thought it only appropriate to put an Aussie in here. An incredibly brooding hunk of an Aussie at that. Like a good wine, this man has certainly ripened with age. I would rather not share the images I found from his Home and Away days in the late 80's. All I can do is marvel at the wonders that a few wrinkles and lines can do for this man's appeal. Along with his deep, downward sloping brow line and a delicious set of full lips, this is the most devastating man to emerge from the Aussie A-list. He can be my Guardian anyday.

Number 3: Pharrell Williams

Lead singer of N-E-R-D, Neptunes producer, and composer of countless chart-busters, Pharrell Williams has a phenomenally innovative sense of rhythm and intuition for instrumental composition. This man revolutionalized pop. His appeal also lies in the fact that his lean stringy muscular appearance gives the impression that he has been constructed out of molten metal, and molded with hands only a woman can possess. Voted Best Dressed Man in the World by Esquire Magazine and gracing the list of Most Eligible Bachelors in People, he swoons masses.

Number 2: Clive Owen
Clive Owen defies the stereotype of fish-belly-British-man with his looming rugged presence and tough yet exuberant exterior. This man can be easily forgiven for leading the set of King Arthur, because he is uncontrollably sexy. Appropriately, he is cast often as the prick, with his tousled thick mane and devilish grin, Clive Owen is that bastard you can't keep your hands off.

Number 1: Jake Gyllenhaal

Lo and behold, Jake Gyllenhaal, the most brilliant thing to blind us from the silver-screens ever since the explosion of that giant meteor in Deep Impact. My friend sent me this picture earlier in the day. I had to close it because such stimulation during work-hours simply cannot comply with company regulations. As a fellow female wisely quipped: "I would take Jake once before I'd take Brad 100 times". Amen to that. There is nothing one can say that will do his exquisiteness justice. Heath Ledger may be the better actor, but this cowboy is ridin' home with me. Or ridin' me at home. Whichever.

If you can provide a sepia picture of yourself in a compromising position, we will take your application under consideration.

I don't understand the whole Jake Gyllenhaal thing.

The guy is ok looking, but not a demi-god.

Are you guys a fan of Donnie Darko?

Most women I know with Jake obsessions started them with this movie.

Clive Owen -- now your talkin. Not only is he sooo much more interesting looking than Jake but he could kick his arse with his little pinky (the one on his finger).

Plus he's got the whole British thing going on.

Anon: Gyllenhaal very okay looking indeed. His rise to the number one spot can be attributed entirely to the twisted pleasures derived from him playing wheel-barrow with another man.

Ms Yay: Clive Owen tickles my fancy very muchly too. I suppose you're comparing apples and oranges when you put him next to Jake.

Thanks for your comments guys! Feel free to nominate anyone you feel I didn't do justice for.

And that's Jake obscuring his best feature... though his hands are gorgeous as well...

Here's some well-earned eye candy for y'all ^^

I must say the physical beauty is greatly enhanced by his considerable talent, good-natured personality
and nonconformist attitude...

P.S. Err, what does 'wheelbarrowing' refer to?

> Heath Ledger may be the better actor,

Do you mean in BBM or in general?
I think they were both in the right place at the right time, and Heath made the commitment based on his interest in exploring his own layers of repression, having made more of an intimate connection with his role than Jake had with Jack. But I don't think that means that he's a beter actor, either in this movie or in general.
Even though Jake is from the U.S Heath seems more comfortable in cowboy clothes, probably since he grew up as a 'regular' kid in Perth, which he deems the most isolated city in the world - he was already a capable horseback rider by the time he left for Sydney; Jake, by contrast, grew up in Hollywood with famous family members (his mum and sister being Oscar-nominated), got his first driving lesson from Paul Newman, has Jamie Lee Curtis for a godmother, and so on...
I'm not sure if Heath finished Year 12 before heading over to Sydney and giving acting a shot? Jake got his start at 11 in an Oscar-nominated film, and his interest in Buddhist theory meant that he almost graduated with a degree in Eastern Philosophy from Columbia. I think experiencing university culture is difficult to act around if you value your education, and Jake's discomfort with unpleasant emotions in RL makes his performance perhaps more challenging... I mean Heath is kind of like Ennis-lite, lol... and of course Jake had to take on the more risky and challenging role of the Jack as the instigator. You don't get the impression he's all that sexually assertive a guy to begin with.
I think that Jake was more convincingly romantically and sexually invested in their bond (though they both could've used better direction and more scolding from Michelle ;o) ), without which the 'love story' angle would have been less poignant. Heath seemed to enjoy chewing on his tongue so much that he forgot to act like he was in love. You'd think that Heath would've had more inspiration since he wasa making a real-life connection romantic connection off-set... and Jake was trying to deal with a widely publicised break-up.
Besides, acting turned on by Heath Ledger? I'd personally find it exhausting, and that would be without simulating my first same-sex encounter with him on a film set. ;oD

I didn't actually enjoy their performances ('exfoliating' aside) very much, since I've appropriated Jake's "this movie means more to me socially than it does artistically" for my own purposes, but I think jake's journey through BBM is underrated. ^^
I would've loved to see him nominated for Jarhead, actually. If it were up to me Jarhead would've picked up Best Picture, but oh well. ;o)

Woah, that 2nd one of Jake was beautiful. Just marvellous. Yes I do agree that the pic I posted merely caught him at an extremely sexual angle, but didn't do those baby-blues any justice! Thanks for the fab eye candy! Where's that photo-printer when you need one...

P.S I apologise for the vulgar reference to wheelbarrowing....

And as for Ledger, I must say that my impression of him being a better actor may have come from the fact that his performance was more widely praised. However I do still think that he did the part of Ennis Del Mar painfully well; very subtle and moving. Although to be fair, the part of Ennis had more potential for exploration than Jack. I also loved Ledger's brief yet powerful appearance in Monster Ball. Come on, that got you didn't it? You can almost forgive him for being in a Knight's Tale....almost.
I do agree that Gyllenhaal's performance in BBM was underrated. I was very touched by it, but I attributed to the fact that merely staring at him made me forget what the first 20min of the film was about....

For some reason I don't remember Heath's performance in Monster's Ball, but I do keep hearing about how mind-blowing he was...

merely staring at him made me forget what the first 20min of the film was about....

The moment they cut to the close-up of Jake shaving in the mirror I was like "for a significant percentage of this movie audience, a plot, let alone artistic value, will no longer necessary. I'm not sure if this is good - can this guy really act?"
And upon that first viewing I confess I was extremely underwhelmed by his performance... I wasn't really sure where he was coming from, and I suspected him of having only marginally more range than Orlando, which ppl had somehow glossed over in their rave reviews. Then I realised that he was supposed to be playing an empty shell of a person, someone who ppl habitually dismissed as 'worthless' upon first glance, and I started to appreciate his performance for what it was. It wasn't until my second or third viewing, and many an interview later, that I realised that he had completely transformed himself on screen, and had given a performance just as worthy of note as that of Heath. I really think that they should've been competing in the same category.
Jake has actually received a very high level of acclaim for a number of his previous projects - he won a very prestigious theatrical award for a play called This Is Our Youth which ran for ages in London, for instance. Not bad for his stage debut, which he impulsively pursued on the advice of an actor he was working with (who just happened to be Dustin Hoffman, lucky guy). Steven Spielberg likened him to an Italian silent movie star in The Moonlight Mile, and he has had consistently strong reviews up to Jarhead (which came out b4 BBM in America). He's been complex and engaging in all of his roles, taking on the sort of intense, troubled characters that didn't make Viggo Mortensen famous in the early stages of his career but are a pleasure to watch now. If he hadn't done Jarhead and Brokeback Mountain I'd still be interested in keeping track of his films, because he chooses them so wisely, but after completely reinventing his image and raising his personal standard in Jarhead, then daring ppl to raise an eyebrow at him saying that he had a same-sex crush while he was growing up and that if he were to fall for a guy he wouldn't be afraid of it, I can't wait to see what he does next... and the fact that he went from working with Sam Mendes to David Fincher recently is incredible, not just because they're possibly some of the most inventive directors today in Hollywood, but because Zodiac is the kind of film that appeals to dark, twisted, cynical males (i.e. the type of ppl who tend to snicker at Brokeback Mountain), and I bet the movie will do very well with that demographic.
He's totally reinventing what it is possible for a young, attractive actor to do with his career, and setting a note-worthy precedent. And he doesn't seem half as affected as most ppl with his profile, which is refreshing.

Besides, check out some of the crap he's had to deal with (and this is on the red carpet of two of the most prestigious awards ceremonies):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fwSaDDjlng&search=jake%20oscar%20isaac
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki9t5kUFdg0&search=bafta%20jake

Where do they hire these ppl? Isaac M should've already been fired for touching Scarlett Johanssen's breasts at the Golden Globes.
Another reason I can't wait to see how he negotiates HW from now on... he's going to be working with some of the more progressive people in it, and no doubt continue to choose projects that are wholeheartedly worth a second glance... possibly even a third. ^^

Wow I must confess that I have not conducted extensive study into Gyllenhaal's career, as my attention seems to always be diverted towards his image-related profiles.
That and I've heard about a few flops such as A Good Girl and Proof. I'm also ashamed to admit that I have not watched Donny Darko, but I'm going to get on that.
It's a very interesting take on Jack Black's character you have there. I never thought about it from that angle. But now it gives Gyllenhaal's approach to that character more sense. I do think that his portrayal should have deserved more praise, as good as Ledger's acting was. Maybe he could have been nominated for Best Actor too, considering that Judy Dench got a Best Support Actress award for being in a film for 20 seconds.

Well after watching that clip I just realized how boring these reporters really are. They just jump in the capitalize whatever is easiest to pick on. But Jake looks like he's already used to it, taking this role would entail copping some jeers I suppose. Good on him.

I certainly can't wait to watch Zodiac, it definitely sounds very interesting, and his roles hopefully can progress in that direction. Haha I've never thought Gyllenhaal was that interesting to study but now I'm starting to want to see his films!

> That and I've heard about a few flops such as A Good Girl and Proof.

My favourite Jake movies are Jarhead and October Sky (based on the true story of an aspiring rocket scientist, also starring Chris Cooper and Laura Dern), closely followed by Donnie Darko (you'll love it) and Moonlight Mile (starring Dustin H and Susan Sarandon). I've heard that Lovely and Amazing is good, and though The Good Girl is average, he's terrific as the somewhat psychotic Holden Worther (check out this interview by Chelsea Clinton - http://www.looksmarthighschool.com/p/articles/mi_m1285/is_1_33/ai_96694229 [Martha's Vineyard is an island in Massachusetts, a favourite holiday spot for East Coasters]). I can't recommend Proof, but I will say he looked very, very good in it. ^^

> I never thought about it from that angle.

I found that I really couldn't appreciate what Ang Lee was trying to do the first few times I saw it... I mean, I could barely pick up what Heath and Jake were saying in some of their scenes to begin with, and I was expecting something very different due to the hype around it... I really think that this is the sort of movie that has to be viewed in an isolated environment. I found the crowds kind of took away from it. P I think, also, it's difficult to appreciate the lifestyle of economically destitute rural Wyoming in the 60s and 70s when you're halfway across the world. This is also not the kind of movie you'd expect to have celebrated by mainstream awards bodies... it's not only about men who cheat on their wives with each other, it's very unusual in its subtety, and kind of leaves you feeling like you've been punched in the stomach multiple times.

> Maybe he could have been nominated for Best Actor too, considering that Judy Dench got a Best Support Actress award for being in a film for 20 seconds.

Yeah, I didn't think it was fair to Jake, as he had around the same screen-time as Heath. I can see why Heath's performance is one of the focal points for many, I just wish people wouldn't judge Jake's performance as somehow inferior, because he was remarkable in his own way.

Now what *really* puzzles me is why they kept playing the clip of him shouting 'you have no idea how bad it gets!' for all the awards ceremonies (except the Baftas). It makes me cringe every time, and possibly his least effective scene in the film, though he manages to do a lot even within the loss of timing... in contrast, the scene where he stood up to his father-in-law was so mesmerisingly nuanced and on par with the best of Heath's work, so I'm a little confused there.

> But Jake looks like he's already used to it, taking this role would entail copping some jeers I suppose. Good on him.

I think Isaac Mizrahi is my latest definiton of 'slimeball'. I have a feeling they both saw Jake as someone they could completely ridicule without batting an eyelid, but the joke is on them since he won the Bafta, (baby,) and there's nothing like not being able to face the camera directly after an interview to demonstrate just how conspicuously morally absent you happen to be. And that lady didn't *need* Charlize Theron to walk up to her clutching her stomach in repulsion to discredit her entire work that night...

It's cute, I think Jake's family and friends are now paying extra special attention to his needs (I think it was obvious he went to some pretty dark places in order to do BBM and Jarhead), and I hope he meets someone really lovely to fall
deeply in love soon. ^^

Aiye{/ah}, it's 4:19am la!

You certainly sound like an avid fan! That interview was very interesting, I suppose that was a promotion for his movie "A Good Girl"?
I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of his films, so he's not just a pretty face!
I think another thing about BBM is that it's so beautifully shot, everything was done rather perfectly.
I noticed they always show you that 'you have no idea how bad it gets' bit alot. I agree that there are other parts in the film where Gyllenhaal has delivered a more moving performance. Maybe they did it cos it's loud? And people can hear? Haha I don't know. But I find they do that to alot of movies, always using the less effective scene as promotional material. I thought the scene where he had stood up to his father in law was one of the most effective moments in the movie as well. Now that you mention it, I nearly forgot about it!
Yes I saw that scene with Mizrahi, I guess that's an unfortunate side-effect of the trend of introducing shock factors into television, bordering on offensive and just unnecessarily grotesque.
Wow you're up pretty late..
