Olay Total Effects Moisturiser

A therapist once advised me to beware of products you can easily buy from supermarkets – they may be relatively cheaper than ones you buy at David Jones counters, but there’s a reason for it. After my experience with Clearasil and Neutrogena, I thought she may be right.
Then I got sucked in by the Olay Total Effects moisturiser commercials – I’ve always liked Shelley Craft’s smile from the Great Outdoors. But it was the statistics they were showing of the percentage of women who had noticed results after long-term use. So I decided to try it out. What can I say? I’m a marketer’s dream.
Olay Total Effects moisturiser claims to fight the 7 signs of aging:
1. Visibly diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
2. Smoothes skin texture - visibly and to the touch
3. Even skin tone for younger-looking, more balanced colour
4. Improves surface dullness, giving skin a radiant, healthy glow
5. Minimises the appearance of pores
6. Visibly reduces the appearance of blotches
7. Soothes dry skin, hydrating with Olay moisture
VERDICT : The moisturiser is a little thicker than what I was used to – Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion and Dermalogica’s Skin Smoother – but it glides on my skin very smoothly and is quickly absorbed. It doesn’t leave my skin looking oily either. On the contrary, my face looks fresh and smooth. After only one week’s use, I noticed that my skin tone is more even and I’ve actually stopped using foundation to mask the discoloration around my nose and mouth. My skin also looks brighter and, yes, it did minimise the appearance of pores. Unfortunately, it hasn’t done anything to reduce the fine lines that are now sprouting on my face, particularly on my forehead. Another downside is that if I apply the moisturiser too liberally to my face (my skin is prone to drying during the cold, windy months), my face ends up looking a little white and I have people asking me anxiously if I’m ok because I’m looking too pale.
Having said that, I’ve been using Olay Total Effects moisturiser for three months and, without a doubt, this is the best moisturiser I’ve used to date. It’s delivered six of the seven it’s promised to deliver and, for $29.95 for a 50g bottle, is definitely worth more value for money than the high-end ones.
RATING : 4.5/5
