Oh no! The Perm is back!
March 25th 2008 00:03
When I heard that sales of home perming kits are up by 50% in the UK this year with Australia soon to follow, I was catapulted to that very grim memory of my grandmother getting the bright idea to perm just my fringe – with disastrous results. Whenever I think of perm, I think poodle hair, peroxide, pink lipstick and wearing two knee-length socks pushed down toward the ankles and the term ‘bushpigs’.
But top UK hairdressers assure us that the perm of the 21st century is all about ‘volume, glamour and movement, not the hideous poodle perm of the old’. People are apparently getting bored with straight hair and want more depth and dimension in their hair. Curls and waves are now turning up in more fashion shows and that the electric industry has picked up on this trend, has re-invented carmen rollers, curling tongs, etc.
While home perming kits’ sales may have increased, hairdressers don’t recommend perming your hair at home. Choosing the right solution for the hair can be very tricky – too strong a solution will result in a ghastly frizzy ’do while a too-gentle one won’t have any effect but will still make your hair super-dry. The best bet is to book yourself at a hair salon and let an expert do it. Safe advice, no doubt.
I admit I sometimes get bored with my straight hair that fall around my face like stiff curtains and long for those seemingly natural big waves that bounce merrily on the shoulders. But a permanent perm? I think I still have too much baggage to consider that. I’ll stick to my rollers, thanks.

Oh Christ. I don't think you should permanently do anything to your hair! I had mine permed straight years ago and it was wrecked for ages.
I am going to straighten my hair every day when this gets big. Naturally, I look like I have a spiral perm and I don't want people thinking I have stooped to this trend!
I have been considering getting my eyelashes permed though...

I wouldn't want a really curly perm though, more like a body wave.

Journeywoman, I didn't think of it that way!
Cibb & Louie, sorry but I think this perm thing will be here to stay for another 10 or so years...
Tracey, now that the 70s fad is fading, something else has to come along to replace it
Morgan, I'm with you. You might as well wear a clown's wig.
Eva, my sentiments exactly!
Mich - No! That's only a step away from getting your hair permed!
Jarrah - I think I'll just stick to my love of the 80s songs
Maribeth, hehehe...I still have pics of myself with the dreaded perm
Lily, I actually wouldn't mind buying a curling rod..
Pat, I don't want those frizzy ringlets that bunch up close to your head but just a body wave to add volumen and make my hair more interesting.

WHY??????? How could someone look at a picture of a perm and think to themselves, "that looks good"?.
I don't care how fashionable it becomes, I'm not getting a perm - I had two when I was younger (and I can't for the life of me think why???)

Me neither. Frizzy ringlets is not the look I'm going for.
I will probably never get one, though, because I'm afraid it will damage my hair.

Lara, don't laugh now. I hear 80s hairstyles are all coming back. The horror of it all!
Pat, I've sworn never to touch my hair with any products again besides shampoo & conditioner.
Tammy, my memory hasn't recovered from it!
