The end of free beauty samples
June 20th 2006 06:36
I am sad to discover that the days of exploiting the generosity of Aesop ladies are over. Best known for their high energy optimism and eagarness to stuff your hands with a million sample products which lasts weeks, Aesop ladies are a broke beauty fanatic's best friend.
I have been occasionally guilty of posing as an Aesop newby as a ploy for repeated nabbing of freebies from these ladies, who have unknowingly supplied me with a few months worth of free samples which now pile on my makeup counter. Karma has finally caught up with me today as I innocently enquired after a cleanser at the David Jones Aesop counter. After giving me a full hand cleansing and massage, the nice lady gave me 16 samples of cleansers and moisturizers, enough to last me weeks!
Before I broke into a silent victory jig, she informed me of Aesop's new system of taking down the names and emails of all clients who have received samples so they have a database of client profiles. An extremely clever move, keeping your customers happy while issuing a quiet warning. I was reluctant to leave any details, even tempted to give a false name. But going undercover for a few free skincare samples is too far of a stretch, even for me.
