What's your tried-and-tested Beauty trick?
October 4th 2007 02:43
Whether you came across them by accident, your favourite celeb swears by them or your friend strongly recommends them, there are some beauty tricks that actually work and don't break your budget. Here are some of mine, what's yours?
1. This one I found by accident when I had a slight shaving mishap and had to stay in the bathroom for a while. Directly after showering, rub moisturiser all over your body and stay inside the bathroom for 10-15 minutes (brush your teeth, wash your face, sit in the toilet, etc). I find that the warm, damp air makes my skin absorb the moisture, making my skin softer and more supple.
2. Another one I found by accident - directly after a morning workout, wash your face and slather on some moisturiser. You'll have a natural healthy glow that will last all day that you'd hate to cover up with make-up.
3. How many times have you find yourself rushing home from work to prepare for a big night to find you don't have time to wash your greasy, limp hair? Add volume and absorb the grease by rubbing talc powder into the roots of your hair and blow-drying it. This is a trick a lot of hairdressers swear by.
4. To make the curl on your lashes stay longer, use the eyelash curler AFTER the mascara, but wait about a minute.
5. Lips looking and feeling chapped because of the recent weather? Condition and plump your lips by gently scrubbing vaseline onto them with a dry toothbrush at night. In the morning, create your own coloured lipgloss by mixing vaseline with your favourite shade of lipstick.
6. If you're Asian, you'll understand what I'm talking about when I ask - don't you hate how the hairs on your eyebrows go straight down, sometimes creating a ragged, uneven bottom line? Brush your eyebrows across with a hair gel and cut off any stray hairs at the bottom.
7. I tend to stay away from eyeliner pencils to fill in the gaps as they can make your brows look harsher. Besides, having 'leaking' eyebrows in the rain aren't very attractive, you know. Opt for a brow bush powder instead - one or two shades lighter (if you're a brunette) or darker (if you're blonde) for a soft, natural brow look.
8. After washing and towel drying your hair, bend over and let your hair hang down then blow dry from the root to the tips to create instant volume in your hair. Never blow up against the hair tips as this causes damage to the hair and more split ends.
9. Here's a facial scrub masque that you can whip up yourself at home or if you've forgotten to have your daily dose of fruits and there is a bunch of rotting bananas on your counter. Mash one banana and mix well with 3-4 tablespoons of honey. Apply an even layer to your face and let it set for 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly to reveal an oh-so-smooth face.
10. I've only recently just tried this and will be looking out for the results but apparently, this is a huge hollwyood beauty trick, according to Diane Irons, a model who's written several books on beauty and make-up tips she's picked up from the modelling industry. Did you know that caffeine is a key ingredient in many expensive products targeting cellulite? Don't throw away those used coffee grounds just yet. While still warm, rub the coffee grounds onto your problem areas (you may want to line your bathroom floor with papers to catch all the residue), seal the grounds to your skin with a cling wrap and leave for 5 minutes. Shower afterwards.

Oh and that disgusting female up there, I've seen her before, she obviously goes around the traps, she must get a little cold like that.
Well, after I'd had a really good look at what I was not supposed to be looking at, I felt compelled to demurely avert my eyes.
Well, really!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also by accident...sitting a mascara tube in hot water for about 30sec ensures a nice consistency.
Yep. My mascara fell in to the sink!
Lipstick, eyeliners and nail polish in the fridge. (just remember to leave space for food!) Perfumes in the fridge too to stop evaporation but...instant aromatic cooldown (in summer) when sprayed on pulse points.
Will definitely try out your banana-honey masque... hope I don't eat it.

Some great tips you have here!
Using bicarb under your arms saves on using nasty chemically sprays and will keep your BO at bay for the whole day.
Also when after you have brushed your teeth sprinkle some on your toothbrush and brush - watch over the next few days how white your teeth become. No need for expensive aids and natural too so it won`t hurt the body.
Grab some sugar and coconut oil (liquid not solid!) and rub it all over your body - it`s a great exfoliator and rubs the coconut oil in at the same time leaving your skin feeling baby smooth.
If you have trouble with black elbows take a lemon and squeeze it over like you would if you were juicing it. They come clean without having to scrub them painfully!
Gotta love the cheap and cheerful stuff - often works the best!

ps pineapple Dusk? hhhmmmm I must try that!

The face masque sound good, Aimzster. My beauty-therapist friend also got me onto one - making a paste with crushed aspirin and a bit of water. It's particularly good for blemishes and blackheads, but don't talk while you've got it on! You'll feel like your face is crumbling off, lol.

Kat, hahaha...you crack me up! I strongly recommend Vaseline. It's my new best friend this season.
Dusk, I heard about the benefits of keeping nail polish in the fridge. Apparently, it doesn't get clumpy and gives a good constinency. PS. I'm definitely trying that pineapple!
Ash, I remember this soap I bought in Fiji made of coconut oil. It was the best soap I'd ever used and made my skin really nice and smooth. Unfortunately, they don't sell it on line. You've got some good tips there, Ash!
Michaelie, I've also heard about that. That is actually something I'm thinking of trying of. I want to start trying out some home beauty recipes and see which ones work.

My mother used to say beaten egg whites applied as a face mask for 20mins before you go out will tighten your skin - yet leave it moisturised for the entire evening.
Just make sure you wash the whites off before you leave the house.
Can't say I've tried this one personally - but thought I'd share.

A dash of toothpaste on that big ol' pimple will see it gone overnight. It tends to dry it up a fair bit so be careful if you've dry skin.
Saturate hair with hair conditioner or hair masque and don on a shower-cap. Sleep with it overnight, wash as usual the next morning...and you'll have beautifully moisturised hair. If you don't like the idea of sleeping with it, don on the shower-cap while doing housework, etc for at least 20 mins.

Love the tips. I have very fine hair and swear by blow drying my hair upside down.
A good tip for your eyelash curler is to blast it with the hairdryer for a few seconds before using it. The heat from the hairdryer makes the curler work a treat.
I might have to try that mask. And Ash's bi-carb soda trick for the teeth.
I must admit that I do keep my nail polish in the fridge!

I cannot bear to see what happens to my skin if I do not drink 2 litres of water per day - especially in Queensland summers... that is when I also noticed that if I stop drinking coffee as well, my skin really glows.
I noticed that my hair stopped falling out and thickened dramatically after I stopped using chemical hair dyes and invested in some real henna powder from the Indian General store. You can buy Dark Brown (which is still a little orange), but - talking of coffee grounds - I've found that adding Coffee grounds and lemon juice to henna when you mix it, will darken it a shade or two more.
Henna can be messy and requires mixing three hours before use and must be left on for three hours to be fully effective (and your hair can smell like coffee for several days)... but the results are absolutely spectacular.
There is a powder out called Black Henna. It is not natural, but you can add one sachet to darken your mix even more... that done, it will still contain less than half the cancer causing substances that are currently found in commerical hair dyes.
A word of warning : don't add the Black Henna sachet until you are ready to put the henna on your hair ... use immediately, and only leave it on for two hours if you have added black henna.
You'll have to experiment yourself...
I'm with Kylie on that blow drying technique

One more tip if you've tried a raw egg, honey and olive oil conditioning hair mask ...
Make sure the wash-off water is on cool, otherwise you might be left wondering what all the little white bits are in your hair?
Eventually, of course, you'll work out that you have cooked the egg componenet of the mix and be left picking out rather large, dandruff-looking flakes for about a week afterwards...

The best part is that it is CHEAP and avialble at most pharmacies and supermarkets. It comes in several tub sizes and a handy travel tube, one of which I always keep in my handbag! Just look out for the bright red packaging.
