Would you have plastic surgery?

November 1st 2007 01:53
Michelle Pfeiffer was recently voted by US OK! readers as the #1 woman celebrity who has become more beautiful with age. Ms Pfeiffer says that the key to such a timeless beauty is simple – get enough sleep, eat well and exercise appropriately. She also adds that she is not interested in plastic surgery, claiming “All the plastic surgery in the world can’t stop you getting older”. So should we assume that she never had plastic surgery?

Michelle Pfeiffer - an ageless beauty

The discussion I had with my work colleagues over whether or not to believe that she did NOT have plastic surgery (with most insisting that she did judging by how the sides of her nose stretched when she smiles- whatever that means) then led to the question : Would you have plastic surgery, if money wasn't an issue? And by this, I mean for shallow reasons, as in you took one look at yourself in the mirror and thought, "Hmm...that area needs a bit of a nip and tuck."

While I wasn't surprised that all seven of them said 'definitely' if they lived in cut-throat Tinseltown, I was surprised when all said 'definitely' if someone had walked in then and given them free 'samples' with half of them mumbling about keeping it from their husbands who liked them just the way they are.

So I started asking pretty much everyone I came in contact with, stopping short of a drunk man violently shaking a parking meter in Surry Hills. Most said yes. My boss's wife even tried to convince me and another colleague to go to the Philippines because she heard of a 3-in-1 package deal. Two 19-year old acquaintances confessed to getting their boobs done. And even my own dad - my belching, beer-chugging, lift-a-leg-to-let-rip-a-big-o ne dad had had his eyebags removed (this anecdote was willingly disclosed by my mum under the influence of a bottle of Ricadonna).

While I would love to stand firm and announce an intent to embrace and preserve all things natural, I'm realistic enough not to utter 'never' to my own question - especially when I am forced to go through photos of my high school days to point out triumphantly, "See! SEE! I DID have eyelids!!!"

So, would you have plastic surgery if money wasn't an issue? If yes, what would you have done?

HELL YES! I was just thinking about this about an hour ago... I probably think about it every hour, on the hour, lol.

I don't like the idea of it, I don't like feeling like I should be perfect, and I don't like the danger of the operations, but my answer is still a resounding YES!

I would get a breast reduction, first and foremost. And I want laser eye surgery, laser hair removal etc if that counts. Probably a bit of lipolysis here and there... I can't imagine ever getting a facelift, but then maybe I'll be able to in another decade...

Hah! I was just having this discussion the other day...sorry to be shallow, yes. Probably not now...but a little later down the track...but really just to *preserve* how I look, not to enhance...

No, never, unless after a traffic accident of something.

I would.

I think some people's obsession with plastic surgery is ridiculous and it can look terrible when you try to halt the aging process (think Joan Rivers and Nicole Kidman's frozen forehead). But if there's something about your body that has always bugged you and you'll feel more confident about yourself by having surgery, then I say go for it.

I'm not into facial plastic surgery (facelifts and such), but I'd do a tummy tuck.....oh a flat tummy. I used to want a breast reduction....but I've made peace with my boobs, so I'll leave them be. Though perhaps a lift when they get saggy???

I was on the Gold Coast a few weeks ago and apparently it is like ordering Maccas up there

I think the older I get the more likely I would but generally the things I hate go away with exercise like Michelle Pfeiffer says.......

Michaelie - you are a plastic surgeon's dream!

Lara - I'm with you. Preserve, not enhance.

Kat - I wish I could be as certain as you in saying never. At the moment, the only thing stopping me from booking an appointment (other than money, of course) is my hubby. I think he'll divorce me if I go that way.

Kylie - O goodness! Do you remember that woman who wanted to look like her favourite animal - puma or a jaguar? She looked horrible! Yes, I agree, sometimes it all gets a bit too much. I was telling hubby the other day that women in Hollywood are starting to look like each other.

Louie - so does that mean it's cheaper up there? Hmm...

Hgirl - I think it's the kind of question that comes up every now and then. PS. Thanks for dropping by!

Krystal - you're like Kat then! PS. Thanks for visiting!

Personally I think plastic surgery is 'false advertising'. It's not you, and I don't see why people can be so proud to be beautiful after plastic surgery.
So no, I am happy the way I am

There is ONE reason I would have plastic surgery though - is if one day I was caught in a horrific hire / car accident / any accident - that really really damaged my face and skin (like, totally fractures every single bit of my skull leaving me looking like Frankenstein) - Then I would consider it.

Hey Aimzster,

..an interesting question and I would not, unless it was medically necessary... like my boobs suddenly shot up to triple EEE and threatened my back from snapping. OR a sagging belly threatened to trip me up when I walked. *lol* I think those celebs who have had it done, look terrible... and they loose their appeal anyway because people are not silly.

I think I've mentioned Robert Redford before. He has let it go naturally too and I think he looks great, as does Michelle here. I agree with her ... there are so many other 'secrets' to youthful looks and continued beauty. (Hint: Google Lipioc Acid - very good start pre-manopause to really slow down aging process) ... Magnesium too

I am surprised by the number of orblers that would go for p/surgery, though?

Thanks for an interesting post.

Lilla ...

I'm a bit like katzzz - if (for example like someone I know) - you had to replicate say muscle loss through an accident, injury or surgery - then yes - cosmetic enhancement would not be out of the question at all.

In the end - it is an individual choice really. You have to weigh up the pros and cons based on what you're comfortable with really.

That said - I guess Michael Jackson will never be comfortable.
